This subject has been the cause of debate since the phasing out of four star petrol in favour of Unleaded.

There is no doubt that petrol starts to degrade over time due to it’s very nature; Primarily it loses its volatility due to evaporation of the most volatile elements, and what is left after these elements have evaporated is what we call heavy fuel. It is still combustible; but as lawnmower engines predominantly use a float type carburettor which relies on a vacuum to suck the fuel into the manifold, the heavy fuel will not flow easily through the jets
